Summerlicious – Stock ★★★1/2

Decided to try a new restaurant with some foodie friends this year and after a vote, settled on the $25 lunch menu at Stock in Trump International Hotel & Tower.

Right as I walked in, I noticed the pretty interior decor of the hotel. I thought the lobby was really nice if a bit small with its dark granite floors and cool crystal glass of a cherry blossom branch behind the reception desk. Staff was polite, there was a greeter who was kind enough to guide me to an elevator and press a button to the restaurant. Once I entered the restaurant and made my way to the table, a lot of the staff greeted me as well. It may seem like something small but I always take note of politeness.

The restaurant’s located on the 31st floor of the hotel and there are 2 floors as well as a small patio. Summerlicious patrons were seated on the 2nd floor and my table was by the windows, providing a nice view but not really comparable as Canoe’s 54th floor views. On the food quality front, I liked this restaurant but there are little things that irked me about them. Further details on that later..

Getting to the menu, I tried the Tiger Shrimp Ceviche (edamame, avocado, cucumber, mint, basil, lime) for an appetizer. Kind of zesty because of the lime but nice and filled with a lot of shrimp. I did think there was a bit too much fried vermicelli garnish but it wasn’t really a big issue. My main was the Slider Tasting (organic beef & Ottawa valley cheddar, Ontario lamb & chèvre, grain fed chicken & wasabi soy mayo). Small little burgers of beef, lamb and chicken. Pretty yummy and chips balanced out the flavours. For dessert, I choose the Summertime Coconut Panna Cotta (sun-ripened fruits, strawberry nage, pistachio tuile). The toppings, cut up fruits and sauce worked well with the cream. I really enjoyed it!

From my foodie friends, I got to sample a few other dishes like the Dolce Lucano’s Stracciatella (pingue prosciutto, cantaloupe, crostini). I didn’t think it was very filling but it tasted okay and my friend liked it. Both of my other friends chose the Skin Roasted Georgian Bay Pickerel (organic quinoa, fennel & rosé grapefruit crudo, toasted seeds) as their mains. The quinoa was all right but nothing to rave about, while the fish was tender. One of my friends tried the Lemon Meringue Tart (wild blueberry preserve, cassis pearls, honey crème fraîche). Very lemony but the sauce and creme fraiche was a nice touch to balance it.

Now, back to the little things that irked me…why I didn’t put them to 4 stars = yummy level. There was actually a discrepancy in their Summerlicious menu, its fixed now but they had offered 3 samples from their Chocolate Lab only to let me know once I got there that it is only available for an extra cost of $2.50 per sample. They have now replaced this option with the Grand Cru Carïbe Dark Chocolate Fondant (roasted almond streusel, salted java caramel, chantilly cream). Would have been nice to be given this option but I could only choose from the remaining two at the time. I also kind of had an issue when we received our bill. They had charged us an auto gratis for having a big group (3 people is apparently considered this) and $2.50 each for “distilled” water. Never mind that we were not offered tap (if that was even optional) but I find it a bit absurd that they don’t provide complimentary water or at least mention the extra costs to us beforehand.

Overall, I would still recommend this restaurant if they do future -licious events. The food is good but just beware the additional charges. Would be a nice place to check out for drinks, dinner dates or business. Do try to get a table on the main floor. I don’t really see it as a family friendly restaurant but maybe their Sunday BON VIVANT brunch would be more casual? Its $49 per person from 11:00am to 3:00pm though.
