Summerlicious – Blu Ristorante & Lounge ★★1/2

I ate here for a past summer-licious event’s with some friends. I had a salad, veal scallopini with butternut squash puree and tartufo ice cream. Everything was okay but it wasn’t really that amazing. I found the salad had too much sauce on it and the butternut squash puree nice but kind of overwhelming the veal. Perhaps it would have been better if it was placed on the side?  I can only say I loved the dessert. But since they probably bought that….its not much of a recommendation. I did get to try a friend’s dish, they ordered the acorn squash (vegetarian dish) and it was rather good. As for the other pictures posted of the salmon and pasta, etc. I can’t make a comment except I remember being told it was also a bit too salty.

Service is nice though, one of my friends was 30 mins late and I ordered for her thinking she wouldn’t have to wait when she arrived. However, her order arrived sooner then expected and it got cold while we waited for her. Our server was very polite and was more then willing to re-heat it for us without asking or making it seem like an inconvenience. I didn’t get any attitude, which I much appreciated.

This place is nice for a romantic date and eating with friends. Not really for family with kids though. Dress code: Semi-Casual.

    • Thank you so much for the support! I honestly didn’t expect the reaction I got but I am always willing to deal with criticism when its reasonable or understandable because everyone deserves express their opinion. I just want to make sure they do so in a polite manner on my blog.

    • Hi! Thank you for the compliment. Was actually wondering if I should change the colours though. Is it too bland? Worried there aren’t enough pictures.

      As for my blog, I am not tech savvy enough to create a blog from scratch. Haha. I am using WordPress and chose the Oulipo by A. Mignolo theme.

    it is not my intention to be rude, I just like to go to the point.
    I am not a good writer, however, I am a food and wine expert.
    We aim to please everyone, however, there is a small percentage that will not like our product.
    And yes in fact, I am considering to opt out from discounted promotions.
    Every Evening I tried to talk to every table and make sure customers enjoy food and service and music. If there are any issues we address them right on the spot so customers feel satisfied and validated.
    Our policy is not offer any product at discounted rates except for winterlicious and summerliciuos.
    We do not offer free meals either.

    Part of the success of Blu is word of mouth and positive reviews on opentable,
    trip advisor, Urbanspoon, yelp, google and articles from various popular magazines.
    TV shows, etc.

    what does your scoring system works?
    do you have a value for each star
    what is your criteria for each star
    have you put in thought on a scale star point system?
    or you just come up with stars depending how you feel


    • Mr. Rodriguez,

      I don’t think my scoring system is unreal (see my faq section). I place stars based on my experience at the restaurant. I think of many factors when I write my review like service (attitude, getting right orders/bills, helpfulness, etc), food (keeping in mind its based on my personal tastes. Eg. I like sweets and don’t eat spicy food a lot), appearance (layout, washrooms, cleanliness) and such.

      Again, I am not certified or an “expert” in any way and this is a personal opinion. I made my scoring system to help my readers gain a sense of what I generally feel about the restaurant.

    You should not really review restaurants based on winterlicious, and summerlicious menus, or coupons for that matter.

    You should visit restaurants on a regular day and order from their regular menu. This really represents their true food.

    Winterlicious and summerlicious is mainly for people that cannot afford to go out to these places on a regular basis.

    winterlicious menu and summerlicious menu has to be designed keeping in mind there is not much profit during this promotion and also knowing that winterlicious and summerlicious clientelle will not order fine wines or spirits, where the actual profit of a restaurant is generated from

    We did not offer the braised lamb shank during summerlicious

    In terms of your review, there is no sauce on salads
    all ice creams and gelato is made in house
    lamb shank being salty, so you had lamb shank during summerlicious?

    What are your credentials in terms of food skills?

    How many Northern Italian restaurants have you tried?

    Have you acquired food skills by eating out? are these your credentials?

    For how long have you been dining out at fine dining restaurants?

    How many restaurants have you tried in you life?

    eating at expensive restaurants during winterlicious or summerlicious does not make a food expert.

    It amazes me how anyone nowadays anyone with a computer can be a food critic.
    I ask myself sometimes, can I become a car manufacturer critic by driving 5 cars? can I really be a critic of computer manufactures by owning couple of computers?

    • Mr. Rodriguez,

      I am surprised at the barrage of questions and how you addressed my review. A negative and rude tone is never appreciated on my blog (read comments post) but I felt I should address it as you are the owner of Blu-assuming from my quick Internet check. So to answer all your questions:

      1) I do appreciate that you pointed out my mistake. Yes, you were correct about the braised lamb shank. My apologies, I have corrected it. I had the veal scallopini with butternut squash puree (summerlicious menu has been added on the slide show, 2nd picture)

      2) I am aware that -licious events offer customers a more limited experience in terms of food and even service, attracting not your usual clientele. As you said “its mainly for people that cannot afford to go out to these places on a regular basis” and there is little profit to be had unless they order alcoholic drinks, which is not often. Unfortunately, such an opportunity as to when I can visit as a regular customer has yet to appear. Until then, I can only comment based on -licious events.

      I personally love these events because a lot of foodie lovers such as myself get to explore more fine dining restaurants I usually would not patron. If you have problems with this event and believe your restaurant isn’t correctly represented to your liking or making enough profit. Why bother participating I wonder? New customers means there will be new and different reactions/experiences. Note – I DID state that this was a summerlicious review and I even changed the title to make this more obvious.

      3) As for the salad, lets just leave that as difference in opinion because I definitely remember tasting some kind of sauce or garnish on the salad that I didn’t like. Also, if the ice cream is made in house then I apologize again. My friends and I loved the ice cream!

      4) In remarks about my food credentials, I have the same credentials as any other foodie blogger would have. I am not a chef or a certified food critic but a foodie who loves food and who reviews restaurants hoping to share my experience with fellow foodie lovers. I have never claimed to be a certified food critic or “expert” (please read my about & faq section on the side bar of my site). Toronto Foodie is a fun way to express my personal opinions, point of views and tastes.

      Furthermore, I cannot name the exact number of Northern Italian restaurants I have tried or how many restaurants I have tried in my life – who can? As for how long have I been dining at fine dining restaurants? I would just say 4-5 years that I can remember.

      Finally, I have to mention again that I am very surprised at the negativity in your comments. Honestly, not the best customer service attempt at refuting my review or solving what is essentially a customer service problem. Instead of a defensive tone, I would have been more receptive to a “please give us another opportunity to show you how great Blu is with a complimentary meal” or even just a “hope you give us a chance to change your mind in the future.” Instead, I just don’t feel like I should come visit again or even recommend the place. Especially since as the owner, you represent your restaurant and thats too bad as I did think your restaurant had a great romantic atmosphere. Great for dates and dinners, or at least I use to think so…

      Anyways, hope this answers your many questions.
