Interview: FoodPorn.net

Interview with Onyx Clemente, Owner of FoodPorn.net

Onyx was generous enough to accept a brief email interview. Read on to learn about how FoodPorn.net was created and her advice for aspiring writers. Hope you enjoy!

Lets start off for any readers not familiar with FoodPorn.net; please provide a brief explanation about the site and how it was developed.
FoodPorn.Net was created so that food lovers can share wonderful pictures and recipes of food they have created or eaten. This collection of delicious photos is sure to make us all hungry. Many of the images are submitted by foodies, photographers and cooks!

There also isn’t a lot of personal information on the creator/creators of the site. Could you give readers further insight on this or is there a particular reason behind this discretion?
Since the site is created to be a place where anyone can submit photos, the focus of the site is not on the creators. Instead we would like to focus on the food and those who make these masterpieces.
Onyx Clemente, the owner of the site, is in the medical field and has triplets. She is also an avid foodie who loves “food porn”, cooking and entertaining.

Food Porn” is such a unique term and has already become a trendy slang within the foodie community. Was the website just named after this as well or was it from some inspiration/brainstorming?
The website was inspired by the trendy slang used within the foodie community. The idea behind the slang is that a photo of food has the ability to awaken our senses and arouse within us a hunger for the mouth-watering food in the photo.

There is great buzz about FoodPorn.net and from such success, are there any milestones or particular memorable accomplishments you would like to mention?
FoodPorn.net was created to be a community of foodies sharing their photos and successes in the kitchen. These foodies are able to create an account, login, and manage their personal photos. We have also grown to have nearly 800 likes on Facebook as well as regular Pinterest and Twitter followers. We have expanded to include mycookbook.com which is a similar community including recipe storage, meal plans, and more.

With great success, I am sure there were great challenges too. What were FoodPorn.net’s chief difficulties and how were they solved? Or are they still ongoing problems today?
The greatest obstacle that we have faced is that not everyone is familiar with the term “Food Porn.” The word porn has a very provocative connotation and may be found offensive by some. Our challenge is to educate our audience on the meaning of food porn and expose them to a whole new world of delicious edibles.

How about advice for aspiring bloggers wanting to turn their blog into something more profitable or into a career endeavour?
Don’t forget to engage in the entire blogging community. Take the time to see what others are writing and reading so you can stay current with your topics.

One of my own key challenges is gaining more public awareness. I found creating a stronger Facebook and online presence has been really difficult. Do you have any tips concerning this issue?
I think the idea behind social media marketing is simple. You need to engage your audience and be offering them something that inspires, intrigues, or interests them. And, you also need to be willing to ask for their referrals. Once you have an engaged audience they are willing to spread the word.

Finally, from your experience do you have any important last words for aspiring bloggers, entrepreneurs and photographers?
Whenever you take on a new challenge or endeavor, choose something you are passionate about and connect with others that share the same passions. I believe that if you can get excited about what you are doing, the excitement will pass through to your target audience.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Hi Foodie Readers!

I am sorry I have been MIA for the last few weeks, I swear I haven’t abandoned you!!

However, due to a family emergency I had to fly overseas last-minute and did not have the Internet access or time to post about it. I just sent a quick blurb on FB and Twitter. Currently, I am still overseas and will probably not post anything until mid or end of July. If I can post earlier, I will try. Otherwise, you won’t be hearing from me until next month.

Hope you can understand. Thanks!

Summerlicious is here again! For anyone new to the event, it is about restaurants providing three course prix-fixe menu’s at a more affordable price.

I strongly support this event because it attracts new customers for restaurants as well as let foodies visit new restaurants they might not have tried before. I have done Summerlicious and Winterlicious events for the past 3-4 years now, so it’s a definitely a ritual with my friends and I.

Keep a watch on my blog as I will also post my top picks! I base my decisions on various factors such as online reviews, buzz, personal references, restaurant appearance, cuisine and location.

Reservations start June 21st. Check here for more information and restaurant listings:

Macaron Day TO! March 20th, 2012

Assorted macarons in a box.

Image via Wikipedia

My friend told me about this event recently and I just had to write a post about it! That’s how excited I am! I love macarons with a passion..a guilty pleasure passion!

New to the world of macarons? Just to clarify they are vastly different from another confectionary – the macaroons. Check this out: Macaron vs. Macaroons. So if you haven’t gotten a chance to try macaron‘s, March 20th will be the day you can try them for free! Just mention “Macaron Day TO” to participating patisseries and receive a free macaron! Note – limit to one per person at each store, limited quantities available. For any additional purchases of macarons, 25% of proceeds will go to local charity Red Door Family Shelter.

I think this is such an awesome way to raise awareness for Red Door Family Shelter, market participating patisseries and spread some foodie love! Hope you will participate, I sure will! Look forward to a post in the future called “Macaron Hunt” or something along those lines detailing my sweet escapades. :)

Vacation Recap & Questions

Hi foodie readers!

As you probably know I’m back from vacay. I was wondering if you guys would be open to me adding a travel section or maybe just making another blog about travelling? I don’t travel too often, so this would not be updated a lot but I take tons of pictures and I can give detailed tips on what to do or see. I really need some feedback to motivate me, so hope to hear some comments soon!

Now for my recent vacation, I went to Hawaii for 2 weeks and here are some pictures I took.

  1. Hanauma Bay was definitely a highlight in my trip. I loved snorkelling and seeing all the fishes.
  2. I know the hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii but I wanted to add one of Plumeria (aka Frangipani) since it’s one of my favourite flowers.
  3. As for the third picture, yes that is me trying to make fire from wooden sticks! Haha
  4. Ala Moana Beach Park, its right across the street from the Ala Moana Shopping Center
  5. Ala Moana Shopping Center – Central mall in Hawaii, almost 300 stores and restaurants.
  6. Lanikai Beach

Comments

To all foodie readers,

It has come to my attention that I have been missing people’s comments. I found out they were all sent to my spam inbox so if I haven’t answered your comments, please don’t misunderstand! I’m still new to WordPress, so at the moment I am working out the kinks and figuring my way through it slowly. Haha.

I do appreciate your comments and enjoy reading them!! <3

Note* I also look at all comments before allowing them to be posted on my blog. This is only to check for spam and any inappropriate language. I will not edit comments, as long as they are polite. I’m all for free speech but it doesn’t necessarily mean being rude. I want to build a foodie community where everyone can enjoy Toronto Foodie. So if your comments follow this and you don’t see your comment posted right away, don’t worry…its just because I haven’t had the chance to approve it yet. :)

Important – Please keep comments in English, I cannot approve it otherwise.

Thanks and keep spreading the foodie love!

Happy Lunar New Year!

Hoa Mai

Happy Lunar New Year!

Wishing everyone great health, happiness and prosperity.

Lunar New Year begins on January 23rd for both Chinese and Vietnamese this year. 2012 marks the year of the Dragon, which is when I was born too! According to CBC News ”the dragon is the most auspicious and powerful of the 12 signs of the zodiac, one associated with high energy and prosperity.

I thought it would be interesting to write a little bit more about general traditions and food celebrated during Lunar New Year. However, I will place more emphasis towards Vietnamese customs as I celebrate Tết, the Vietnamese New Year and could explain more from first hand experience.

Here are some traditions by both ethnicities:

Do’s

  • Visit relatives and temples. Pray for a better year and forget about any difficulties in the past.
  • Place food arrangements, flowers and incense on an altar to pray.
  • Elders give Li xi (red packets/envelopes with money) to younger children.
  • Return what you borrow and pay debts before Tết.
  • Decorate your home with flowers such as chrysanthemum and hoa mai. Hoa mai (pictured above) and other yellow flowers are meaningful because they are thought of as the golden flower and symbolize wealth and prosperity.
  • Open your door/window to let out the old year but depending on circumstances you can just leave them open during the time you pray.

Dont’s

  • Do not clean on the day of Tết, it symbolizes sweeping away all your luck and fortune.
  • Do not say or do bad things during this holiday
  • Do not wear white dresses or apparel if possible. The colour white symbolizes death in Vietnam and instead try wearing red, a powerful colour.

Food

  • Eat food such as dumplings at a chinese restaurant with family
  • Make/eat Bánh chưng (steamed cake) made from rice, mung bean, pork and other ingredients.
  • Try chicken, pork and vegetables with sticky rice.
  • Make food arrangements for praying, which consist of fruits, rice soup and Bánh chưng. Some examples of these fruits are mango, persimmon, apples, etc.
